Instrumental Provision

Dorset Music Service provide low cost instrument hire to enable all pupils to learn to play a musical instrument. We create learning opportunities through a range of offers including Whole Class Instrumental Learning, Next Steps, Musical Nurture Groups and Music Mentoring.

Classroom Instrumental Learning is offered to all Key Stage 2 pupils in Dorset. The programme lasts for 10 weeks and gives pupils the opportunity to learn to play an instrument and perform as a group. Class teachers work alongside music experts to deliver the programme and ensure that pupils individual needs are met and that they experience high quality music making.

‘Next Steps’ is our follow-on offer from Classroom Instrumental Learning which allows pupils to progress their musical interests on an instrument of their choice. Dorset Music Service will provide an instrument free of charge for 1 year to enable pupils to take up lessons or join a music group to further their playing experience. These lessons and groups are run by providers across the county depending on who is working in the school.

Musical Nurture Groups are aimed at children who the school have identified as being vulnerable or at risk of poor outcomes due to mental health, behaviour or general confidence difficulties. Children learn as a small group of 3-5 pupils and are supported to build their sense of resilience, agency and develop a sense of belonging through musical activity.

Music Mentoring is a tailored 1:1 offer of support for young people with social, emotional or mental health barriers. The pupil will receive a terms worth of individual musical support to develop their musicality using music technology and/or traditional acoustic and electric instruments including the voice. Personal outcomes such as developing resilience, agency and a sense of belonging are considered as important as musical outcomes.
